ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

"If I could tell you just one thing, it would be: Don't be afraid to try new things, step out of your comfort zone and live up to your expectations of yourself.  SMILE. " - Katrina Favell

My name is Katrina Favell and I am Treaty First Nations of the Nisga'a Nation, located an hour from Terrace, BC. I am from the Eagle Clan in New Aiyansh. I am from the Gosnell family, and though I was adopted at birth and raised off-reserve, I have met my biological mother, and travelled back to the Nass time and time again to get in touch with the traditions of our people; harvesting berries, salmon, and cedar, as well as trading commodities which do not grow on the coast with the local people of the Nass Valley...with my biological mother.

I am an artist of many trades and mainly practice painting acrylics on wood and canvas and of coarse the obvious...cedar weaving. I have studied Traditional Northwest Coast art and intend to continue to learn more and practice many of the different skills our people have.

Having been adopted, I grew up not knowing about my culture or the traditions of the Nisga'a People. It wasn't until I turned 18, that I decided it was time to start learning about my culture; finding myself.

Since then, I have became an artist of all sorts, mainly practice painting acrylics on wood and canvas and of coarse the obvious...cedar weaving. I also create one of a kind, unique, stained glass art; specializing in stained glass with an aboriginal twist.

My goal is to teach, what I have learned, to anyone who wants to know, whether they are Aboriginal or Non-Aboriginal; with the exception of some aboriginal sacred practices.  I also want to teach Aboriginal Youth as much as I can about our culture so that they can carry on the legacy and learn about the history and traditional practices of our people; find themselves.

What do I do when I'm not practicing art...enjoying life! I live an active lifestyle/busy lifestyle and would not have it any other way. I love traveling and spending time with my friends, working out, hiking (when I get to the mountains), and training my horses. I currently have 3 horses, all mares. Two 2006 models (Fiesta & Tinker) and a 2003 model. I am hoping to compete in barrel racing with all 3. Right now, I am barrel racing with Indy (2003) and am hoping that as we get better we can become more competative. I will be exposing both '06 horses to a barrel pattern this summer (2009) and the sky's the limit from there!

Never let someone be your priority, while allowing yourself to be their option...
